Charles “Charley” Johnson

There are dozens of people in television who got their career start in Charley Johnson’s newsroom.

Charley began his broadcasting career in radio, announcing and baseball play-by-play while still in high school in his home town of Hastings, MN. For Charley, it combined two of his loves: talking and baseball. After graduating from Concordia College in 1972 (having spent summers working as a floor director at KSTP-TV), Charley stayed in the valley working as news reporter and News Director at radio stations in Grand Forks and Fargo, ND.. He was hired by KXJB-TV in 1974, as a reporter/photographer, but within a year was moved to both the anchor desk and News Director office. Ever since, Charley has earned the respect of viewers and coworkers alike as the valley’s most recognizable and trusted newsman. In 1988, Charley joined KVLY as News Director and 6pm Anchor. Promoted to General Manager in 1997, he gave up his News Director position, but continues to co-anchor the 6pm news. Throughout his long career, Charley has mentored dozens of young journalism grads in their first job out of college, teaching them the principals of sound broadcast journalism and encouraging (and pushing!) them to take risks and do their best work. He is a member of RTNDA, and Past President of Northwest Broadcast News Association, and currently serves on our chapter Board of Governors as Regional Vice President.
