Reed T. Erickson
Bloomington Jefferson High School; Bloomington, MN
A
member of the National Honor Society, Reed has a thirst for
knowledge and understanding that drives his desire to pursue
a career in broadcast journalism. In his application essay,
Reed talked about his love of news – “hearing it, seeing it,
reading it and most importantly, reporting on it.” His career
began in elementary school, reading the morning announcements.
In middle school, he volunteered at the local cable-access
station, working on everything from football games to choir
concerts. In high school, he hit his stride, getting a chance
to get in front of the camera as co-host and writer for “Tomorrow’s
Voices Today”. Reed also participated in a mentoring program
at WCCO-TV. He will attend the University of Missouri – Columbia.

Kathryn Alana Giangreco
Apple Valley High School; Apple Valley, MN
Kathryn
is a 3.975 GPA student headed for Texas Christian University
to study Broadcast Journalism. And her advisor has no doubt
she’ll succeed, describing her as an “accomplished young woman”.
While in high school, she won numerous local and national
academic awards, while also being involved in a wide variety
of extra curricular activities, including DECA, the newspaper,
charity fund-raising, coaching and refereeing soccer, and
more. She was also a reporter on KARE-11’s “Whatever” show.
Kathryn’s ultimate goal is to be a field reporter, investigator,
interviewer and news anchor in the national arena. She is
well on the way to achieving that goal.

Rachel Korman
Hopkins High School; Hopkins, MN
When
it comes to television, Rachel has gone from “knowing everything
about every Nickelodeon show” to seeing television as her
future. She has started on her career path as student producer-director
for Hopkins High School’s “Royal Update”. Her out-going personality
has served her well in on-air roles as reporter, news anchor,
show host, sports anchor and color commentator. Rachel will
attend Indiana University to study journalism and media communications.
Her advisor has no doubt Rachel will take her passion for
this craft into a long career of producing and anchoring news
and sports programming, adding, “I know she’ll do well!”

Timothy Paul Nelson
Sauk Rapids-Rice High School; Sauk Rapids, MN
“Even
as a young child,” Timothy writes, “I was captivated by television.
Not just the shows I would watch, but how it was all put together.”
Reaching high school, he took advantage of the opportunities
and technology his school presented, and got his chance to
actually put it all together as a producer for “The Weekday
News”. Within weeks, Timothy decided he wanted to work in
television for the rest of his life. Timothy maintained a
3.7 GPA while participating in a wide variety of extra-curricular
activities, including dram, DECA and Drumline clubs. As a
senior, Timothy was Executive Producer of “The Weekday News”.
One of his videos won 3rd place in the NASA Student Involvement
Program. Timothy will pursue his to passions - television
and technology - at the University of Minnesota.

Todd Sandler
Hopkins High School; Hopkins, MN
“Since
the age of seven, “ Todd writes, “when I first had my hands
on a video camera, I knew that I wanted to be involved in
television and cinema.” As a student at Hopkins High School.,
Todd exhibited his passion for broadcasting and film production,
working on the weekly “Royal Update” and producing films and
videos for friends and acquaintances in his spare time. Todd
wrote and was photo editor for the school newspaper and was
an integral part of both the TV and Film Clubs at school.
Summers were spent being a Camp Counselor. “Todd is an exceptional
person”, wrote his advisor. “He is a dedicated and responsible
young man who is diligently working toward a career in broadcast
communications.” Todd will attend the University of Minnesota.

Rochelle Larice Younan
Centennial High School; Circle Pines, MN
Rochelle
is entering college with an already impressive resume of broadcast
journalism accomplishments, including KARE-11’s “Whatever”
show, packages broadcast on Channel One, and several awards
from Student Television Network. She was student producer
for Centennial High School’s “Cougar Connection” broadcast,
which is also seen on local access cable. Rochelle hopes to
be an international correspondent, working from the middle
East; to get there, she will pursue a major in Broadcast journalism
and a minor in International Studies at Azusa Pacific University.
Her advisor describes her as a newsroom leader. “Rochelle
will accomplish anything she puts her mind to do”, he says.
