National Student Television and Student Awards of Excellence Announced

The National Television Academy has announced today the creation of National Student Television and the establishment of the Student Award of Excellence to honor outstanding television journalism by high school students. The program is part of the Academy’s newly formed foundation and its educational initiatives.

National Student Television is a program that will promote, encourage and support journalistic skills among students. It will offer curricula designed to expose young journalism enthusiasts to the substantive and ethical aspects of television news.

National Student Television is the first program supported by newly formed Foundation of the National Television Academy, which will administer this, and other educational initiatives. The Executive Director is Av Westin, long-time ABC News executive and former Executive Producer of ABC News’ “20/20.”

“This program will serve as an educational tool that not only rewards students for their broadcast journalism, but encourages critical assessment of television,” explained Westin. “The central focus of our program is to educate students about the protections and responsibilities of broadcasters engendered in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. These underpinnings to the award are crucial to how we will judge the entries, and provide decisive criteria for how we measure our success.”

The Student Award of Excellence is open to any student who is currently enrolled in high school, and is sponsored by the school where the work was produced. Applicants must be currently enrolled as a full-time student as of the application deadline (March 3, 2003). All entries must have been originally broadcast, cablecast or webcast within the National Awards Year from August 1, 2002 to February 28, 2003. Regional Awards will be presented in May, 2003. Regional winners will then be invited to a special national recognition luncheon in Washington, D.C. in June. Go to www.nationalstudent.tv for entry information.

Robert Fransen, Michelle Lee and Mark Millage Join Board of Governors

We are pleased to welcome Robert Fransen, Michelle Lee (KBJR) and Mark Millage (KELO) to our Board of Governors.

Robert Fransen, a Silver Circle recipient in 2001, brings to the Board of Governors a long career in television starting in 1949 at brand new WTCN-TV (now KARE). He worked as a film editor, floor director, show director and production manager. Bob also performed in a daily children's show, a weekly music show and was the station's first weatherman. Bob then helped put KMSP on the air, working with a young News Director named Harry Reasoner. In 1957, he returned to WTCN-TV, now Channel 11 in a sales position and stayed 25 years. During his 18 years as General Manager, WTCN was the top rated independent in the country. Among his lasting legacies at Channel 11 is the Health Fair, which continues in the community to this day. In 1982, Bob added his talents to Hubbard Broadcasting. He was a key figure in the development of Sports production, Conus and U.S. Satellite Broadcasting. We are thrilled to have Bob join us on the Board.

Michelle Lee joins us as Regional Vice President - Duluth, replacing Gina Katzmark. (See related story, below.) Michelle co-anchors KBJR’s News 6 newscasts at 5, 6 and 10pm. This Minnesota native began her news career in radio, working first in Grand Rapids and later in St Paul, at KSTP-AM. In 1983, she made the switch to television, moving to Duluth to be a reporter and anchor at KDLH. In 1991, she joined the KBJR team, where she happily resides today. She is involved with numerous community volunteer efforts in the Northland. Said Lee: “It’s a great honor to join the Board of Governors. I hope to provide a greater voice for broadcasters in the Twin Ports and other small markets who, despite limited resources, manage to deliver a quality news product.”

Mark Millage says his career in journalism started at age 9, when he won a subscription sales contest for a start-up weekly newspaper. He volunteered in radio while in high school and began his television career at the age of 19, landing a news internship at KELO in the summer of 1983. Following his graduation from South Dakota State University, Mark joined KELO full time as a newscast producer. He was named News Director in February, 1989. Under his leadership, KELO’s reputation for news coverage and market dominance has become a benchmark for other television stations. Mark comes to us after serving three consecutive terms on the RTNDA Board of Directors. Mark will serve on our Board as Regional Vice President - Sioux Falls.

KBJR's Gina Katzmark moves to WBTW-TV, Florence, South Carolina

Gina Katzmark, formerly Assistant News Director at KBJR, is now News Director at WBTW-TV in Florence/Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Gina served on our Board of Governors as Regional Vice President, Duluth. While we will miss her energy and enthusiasm, we certainly can’t begrudge a move to a new job in a milder climate!
