The Call for Entries is now available for the National News and Documentary Emmy's, to be presented on September 3, 2003 in New York. Members of the Upper Midwest chapter may qualify to enter if any of their work, telecast between January 1 and December 31, 2002, has been available to more than 50% of the total U.S. television homes. Go to www.emmyonline.org and follow links to National News and Documentary Emmy Awards. Information and forms can be downloaded from the site, or you may request hard copy by sending an email to: [email protected]

Emmy Awards: It’s Payback Time!

Regional Emmy Awards are a cooperative venture. High-quality peer judging is a process of trading with Chapters around the country: we send our entries off to be judged. In return, we judge their entries. This year, we are doing a straight exchange with the Seattle-Northwest chapter - an exciting prospect as Seattle is well known for broadcast news quality. Within the next week, you may receive an email or phone call requesting your help in organizing a judging panel or serving as a judge. Thanks in advance for saying yes.

Midwest Journalism Conference

March 28-29, Holiday Inn Select, Bloomington
In just three short years, the Midwest journalism Conference has become the second largest regional conference in the country. Co-produced by the National Television Academy , NBNA, NPPA, SPJ, AP of Minnesota, RTNDA, the University of Minnesota, University of St Thomas and the Minnesota Journalism Center, the conference brings together print, television and radio journalists for breakouts and main sessions of interest. This year, we have been joined by IRE who will be hosting a day-long Better Watchdog Session on March 28. The Conference main session, hosted by NBNA, features Jill Geisler, head of Poynter’s Leadership and Management Group and Scott Libin, former KSTP-TV News Director and now Cowles Fellow at the U of M. "How to Research a Company"

Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, 8:30 a.m. - noon
at the University of Minnesota School of Journalism & Mass Communication
AND now being offered via satellite at the University of Minnesota-Duluth!
Sponsored by the Minnesota Journalism Center and James J. Hill Reference Library
Deadline to register is Feb. 10, 2003

In this era of corporate scandals and accounting misdeeds, it is more important than ever for journalists to know how to find the inside information about companies. Advertising and public relations practitioners are looking for the strategic edge that solid background information about clients and companies can provide. This half-day workshop will teach skills and strategies for researching different types of companies with online databases, print publications and public record resources.

The cost of this half-day workshop is $25 for all participants, which includes workshop materials and, for those attending at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, parking and breakfast.

For more information about this workshop, go to: http://www.mjc.umn.edu
To register for this workshop, go to: http://sjmc.umn.edu

"Journalism After September 11"

A presentation by Barbie Zelizer, University of Pennsylvania Annenberg School for Communication
SJMC Conference Center (100 Murphy Hall)
Wednesday, Feb. 26, 5:30 p.m. reception, 6 p.m. program

In September 2001, a single story dominated the U.S. and international media: the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. For most people, this story of terror and destruction was conveyed through the eyes of journalists, many of who risked their lives reporting from New York and later, from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Barbie Zelizer has gathered many of these stories into "Journalism After September 11," a collection of articles that examines how American and British journalism responded to the events of September 11.

Zelizer is the Raymond Williams Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Her most recent books include Remembering to Forget: Holocaust Memory Through the Camera's Eye (1998), Covering the Body: The Kennedy Assassination, the Media, and the Shaping of Collective Memory (1992) and the edited collection Visual Culture and the Holocaust (2001).

The lecture is free and open to the public. No reservations are required. For more information, go to www.mjc.umn.edu or contact the Minnesota Journalism Center at (612) 625-8095 or e-mail [email protected].
