The Emmys Class NATAS members went back to school this spring, to teach the enormously successful Emmys Class. We joined forces with the University of Minnesota’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications, headed by SJMC Director and NATAS Board member Albert R. Tims, to offer a comprehensive semester-long course covering every element of the broadcast news business. The unprecedented course was taught by a team of Emmy award winning professionals from all stations in the Twin Cities area. The twelve students who participated had an intense and in-depth look at our business in a course that combined hands-on learning with lectures and station visits. NATAS board members Jane Helmke (KARE) and Alan Beck (formerly of KMSP) worked with the University to design the syllabus and plan the course. Due to the excellence of this program, the national office is considering adapting this curriculum model to create similar classes at universities nationwide.

| Great Danes In March we were host to 16 Danish broadcast journalists for a workshop called “American Broadcast Journalism: Award-Winning Techniques.” Again we teamed up with SJMC Director Albert R. Tims and Minnesota Journalism Center Director Kathleen Hansen. (Kathy is also a NATAS board member.) The seminar for the Danes comprised all aspects of news production from on-camera and behind-the-camera techniques, ethical decision making and editorial meetings. The seminar was taught by NATAS members, who gave freely of their time to introduce the group to our American way of producing the news. The group was divided into teams and assigned to specific stations where they spent a day job-shadowing their American counterparts. This seminar was sponsored by Den journalistiske Efteruddannelse (DjE), who want to send another group of professionals our way next Spring. If you are interested in participating, please contact Teresa Vickery at [email protected].

| Dollars to Scholars We are proud to kick off our high school scholarship program this year thanks to the able leadership of Scholarship Chair Allen Constantini (KARE). We awarded four $1,000 scholarships to students hailing from Chaska High School, Hopkins High, Wayzata High and as far away as Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We wish to acknowledge our appreciation for the financial support received from WCCO and KARE, both of whom sponsored scholarships. Many thanks go to our presenters this year who made presentations at the scholarship recipients’ schools: Don Shelby (WCCO), Diana Pierce (KARE), Mark Millage (KELO), and Allen Constantini (KARE). Finally, we are pleased to announce that we will be able to award six scholarships next year due to the generosity of first, our Silver Circle recipients, who are funding a specific scholarship and secondly, our Emmy Awards entrants whose entry fee included a $5 contribution to the scholarship fund.
